2015 Ford Expedition Scores Top NHTSA Safety Rating

Ford received great news recently because the 2015 Expedition full-size SUV was awarded a five-star Overall Vehicle Score by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). That rating is the highest the government safety agency gives out. To gauge the abilities of different vehicles, NHTSA subjects them to a battery of tests, including front- and side-impact scenarios.

Steve Kenner, who is the director of the Ford Global Automotive Safety Office, said that the 2015 Expedition is outfitted with new driver-assistance features that help augment its safety offering. "These technology upgrades make Expedition the full-size utility vehicle for customers who want capability, style and modern conveniences," said Kenner.

The 2015 Ford Expedition comes with a wide array of standard safety features that are designed to help the driver avoid accidents. Among these is a tire pressure monitoring system, rearview camera, front and rear parking sensors and AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control. Buyers can opt to add all-new technologies to the SUV, like a Blind Spot Information System with a cross-traffic alert feature. The system uses radar sensors to detect if another car is in the Expedition's blind spots, such as when the driver is reversing out of a parking stall or driveway. Once the system detects the presence of another vehicle, warning text appears on the message center and an alert sounds off, making the driver aware of the situation. A light also flashes in the side view mirror that corresponds with the side of the SUV where the other vehicle is approaching.

Some of the safety features on the 2015 Ford Expedition are designed to protect the occupants in the event the sport utility vehicle crashes. Side-curtain airbags come standard, providing protection for occupants sitting next to the windows on all three rows of seating. After a collision, the SOS Post-Crash Alert System automatically calls for help, even if the driver and passengers are unable to place a call to emergency services.

As part of the redesign for the 2015 model, the Ford Expedition comes with a new, more modern design both inside and out. A Platinum trim level was also added. Another big change has been the addition of a single engine for all trims, a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 that puts out 365 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque for surprisingly strong performance. The new powertrain provides excellent efficiency, helping owners reduce how much fuel they use. The EPA estimates the Expedition achieves 16 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway, when the SUV is outfitted with two-wheel drive.

The new Expedition comes with a healthy amount of utility, making it useful in a variety of ways. When it comes to towing, the full-size sport utility can handle up to 9,200 pounds, when it is properly equipped. The extended-length version of the vehicle boasts the best maximum cargo volume for its class.
