Nissan celebrated with Rishabh Mehandru of Portland, Oregon in March as he purchased the 75,000th all-electric Nissan Leaf in the United States. This black 2015 Leaf SV is actually Mehandru's second Leaf. He leased his first one two years ago to help reduce pollution and greenhouse gases. Mehandru said, "I'm a runner, and when I ran outside I found that I was inhaling a lot of exhaust from the gas-powered cars that passed me on the roads. I instantly became aware of the amount of fuel I was burning, and that's when I first decided that I wanted to get an electric car. When the lease was up on my first Nissan Leaf, I knew that I didn't want any other car.… I love how quickly I can get up to speed on the highway. Even my three-year-old son notices how zippy it is, and I like that I don't have to stop for gas."

The Nissan Leaf has seating for up to five passengers and an EPA-estimated driving range of 84 miles on a fully-charged battery. Fuel economy in miles per gallon gas equivalents or MPGe is 126 city, 101 highway and 114 combined, making it perfect for commuters like Mehandru. He recently convinced a friend to buy a Nissan Leaf for its quiet ride, efficiency and premium features. A federal tax credit of up to $7,500 makes it much more affordable.

The front-wheel-drive hatchback is powered by an 80-kilowatt electric motor with a 24-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack. It takes about eight hours to charge with the standard 3.3-kilowatt charger. With a 240-volt power source and the 6.6 kilowatt charger, you can recharge the Leaf in around four hours. You can also use the optional quick-charge port to recharge the battery to 80 percent capacity in just half an hour. All models offer Normal, Eco-Mode and B-Mode transmission settings. Eco-Mode reduces sudden acceleration to save energy, and B-Mode uses more aggressive regenerative braking, converting the car's forward momentum into energy when you're not pressing the accelerator. It also controls your speed better when you're going down hills.

The Leaf's comfortable interior comes with plenty of space and cutting-edge technology. Standard features include heated mirrors, full power accessories, keyless ignition and entry, automatic climate control, a trip computer, heated front and rear seats, folding rear seats, a tilt-only heated steering wheel, Bluetooth, a 4.3-inch color touchscreen, a rearview camera, satellite radio and more.

The Leaf SV, Mehandru's choice, also has navigation system with a 7-inch touchscreen, cruise control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and a six-speaker audio system. You can also use Nissan's Carwings system with your phone or computer to monitor charging, find charging stations, set charging reminders and even turn on the air conditioning before going somewhere on a hot day. The range-topping SL trim adds automatic LED headlights, fog lights, a solar panel on the rear spoiler for power accessories, leather seats and a cargo cover. An optional camera system with a 360-degree view makes parking much easier.
