Unmissable Fall Semester Events In London In 2019

When it comes to autumn events (and, of course, student accommodation), London doesn’t disappoint.

If you’re studying abroad in The Big Smoke during the fall semester, you’re in luck – there are so many events to help you fill your free time. From film festivals to fireworks, here are some of our favourites.

See the Changing Leaves at the Parks

It’s no doubt you’ll be able to find a park near your student accommodation – London has eight royal ones that cover 5,000 acres and a selection of other open spaces you can visit. They’re lovely no matter the time of year, but they are truly magnificent in autumn when the leaves begin to change. Some parks where you can see the most beautiful autumn colours include Hyde Park (it has over 4,000 trees), Richmond Park and Hampstead Heath.

Halloween-Inspired Events

Halloween has become increasingly popular in the UK, and there are lots of fantastic ways to experience this holiday in London. Whether you want to visit the city’s reportedly haunted spots, dress up and attend a costume party or just snack on some sweets, it’s easy to get in the Halloween mood.

The October London Film Festival

Tired of watching films in your student accommodation? London’s October Film Festival is the answer. This diverse cinematic celebration is a tradition that is over 60 years old, takes place over several days and features creations from over 900 British and international filmmakers who come from over 75 different countries. It shows short and feature films from new and established talent – there’s sure to be something for all interests.

Fireworks on Bonfire Night

If you’ve been in the city in early November, you’ve probably seen fireworks from your student accommodation. London is a great place to celebrate the reason for the fireworks displays: Bonfire Night. Experience it like a local by attending one of the many Bonfire Night events. You’ll be able to eat traditional food, learn about British culture and, of course, watch beautiful fireworks explode above you.

The Lord Mayor’s Show

If you were studying in the city in 2018, it’s likely you heard about Prince Harry’s marriage to Meghan Markle – and maybe even watched the wedding on television at your student accommodation. Londonis filled to the brim with all things royal, so if you liked that celebration, you’ll love the annual Lord Mayor’s Show. It’s a way to say goodbye to the current Lord Mayor and welcome in a new one, and involves a river pageant and a procession. If you have an interest in British royalty, you’ll love this event.

Open House

Each year during Open House, a selection of skyscrapers, tunnels and buildings that are usually closed to the general public open their doors and allow visitors inside… and since these venues are all over the city, it’s likely there will be at least one near your student accommodation. London is filled with fantastic places not often open to the community, so don’t miss your chance to explore them.

From Halloween parties to Bonfire Night, there’s so much on offer when studying abroad in this city during the autumn. Hopefully the events suggested in this article can help you make your fall semester that much more fun.
