What Is The Right Age For Your Child To Learn Coding

As compared to adults, children usually have a larger capacity for learning.

Children pick up new languages, learn to efficiently play new sports, or a musical instrument way faster than adults do. This is because children’s brains make a higher number of neurological connections which makes learning much easier for them. As we become adults, these neurological developments do not happen at such a rapid pace. Stimulation of the brain during these formative years is pivotal for the mental development of children. To invigorate these neurological connections it is important to expose children to a diverse range of activities and experiences. This can be done by teaching your children different languages, mathematics, musical instruments, etc. A great skill to teach your children that will stimulate their mind is coding. As opposed to what a lot of parents think, computer coding for kids is not a fad, it enriches children’s lives with valuable skills like problem solving, creativity, critical thinking, team-work and determination, it also improves their mathematical capabilities. In today’s digital age, coding has become a vital life and career skill.

Now that you know how beneficial coding is, you are probably wondering at what age should you introduce your child to the world of coding. Well, like with a lot of other skills, the earlier the better. Coding games and toys are available for children as young as 3-4 years old. A good early learning centre will have provisions to start your toddler off on his/her coding journey. If children can be taught alphabets and numbers from such a young age, then why not coding. It is high time we realize the importance of teaching our children to code. A lot of children these days are addicted to screens, by teaching them to code from a young age we give them the power to control screens and not the other way around. Research shows that - by the age of four, children begin to comprehend three to five step commands and logic which are crucial skills required to learn coding. Also, like other languages, coding too can be easily picked up by kids from the ages of two to seven. Children are intrigued by visuals and through apps, websites, classes and softwares they can easily be taught how to code with the help of blocks with arrows and symbols that when used correctly move objects or characters across the screen. Also, another benefit of teaching children who are this young to code is that they are not exposed to the prejudices of society, the education system or their peers which may cloud their judgements. Coding truly is the best from all the computer courses for kids these days.

If your kid wants to excel in a STEM career or for that matter any career, he/she will be grateful for being taught how to code from a young age. Remember, it is never too early to teach children how to code. The younger you teach them the more efficient their coding journey will be.
