Practical Tips to Improve Your English Skills

Learning and maintaining good language skills are one of the most important factors to a successful life both in and outside of work. It is your language skills that will enable you to sell yourself better during a job interview, help you talk to the girl you like with more confidence and many other areas in life. Many new language fanatics will tell you that learning a new language is not that hard (especially English). However, they will also tell you that in order to speak a language at a professional level (or fluently if you will) it takes dedication.

You may not be able to tell through my writing, but I myself am not a native to the English language. However, I have managed to keep improving my language skills with a system I’ve developed for myself over the past 10 years. Here are my tips for taking your English vocabulary to the next level.

Travel
My first tip might not be one that you could immediately put to action, but when you do get a chance to travel abroad try to mingle with the locals. By doing so, you will position yourself to improve your pronunciation and comprehension by listening and actively participating in a conversation. Actively involving yourself in conversations will help you to improve your speaking skills significantly. What I’ve found particularly helpful is having to speak English just to get around the city you are visiting.

Watching movies
In this day and age most of the movies that are being broadcasted outside of English-speaking countries have subtitles. This will help you in two ways.

    1. Watching many English movies will help you in expanding your vocabulary and on top of that the subtitles will help you to directly know its meaning.

    2. Try to watch movies without subtitles. From experience I can tell that watching movies without the subtitles will force you to pay better attention and really listen to what is being said.

Watching movies is a great way to improve your English skills as most movies you watch are going to be English anyway. Your third option is to watch English movies with subtitles, but this time try to watch movies that have English subtitles. This would be the best option as it allows you to hear and read in English while watching the movie. Evidently, this will help you tremendously to associate the correct spelling to any word you are not familiar with.

Newspaper
Given the digital age we currently live in, newspapers seem a bit outdated. If you happen to buy the newspapers then try adding an English newspaper to your stack. I prefer to use my smart phone to read in English as I am on the move commuting back and forth for my job. A few of the best sources to use on your smart phone are either the Daily Mail, or the Guardian.

Additionally, try to read magazines that interest you the most. One good way to keep improving your skills is to be conscious about magazines you read. Personally, I have found it to be extremely helpful to choose English magazines over a native-language magazine when I am waiting for an appointment.

Music
Who doesn’t love to listen to music right? In our digital world it is so easy to get access to your favorite music in any given genre. Extremely helpful is adding Spotify to your smart phone will enable you to easily gain access and play your favorite music at the touch of a button. Listening to music is a great way to improve your grasp of the language.

These are the four methods I’ve used personally to improve my English skills from average to fluent both written and orally. There’s also always the option to enroll yourself into a business English course, taking your budget into account this is something that you should consider.
