The first step is in deciding one really wants to be a pilot.  A flying career is exciting but requires dedication.  One must be willing to put in long hours and spend long hours away from home.  A pilot is a career of great responsibilities.  One is responsible for a multi-million dollar aircraft, and the safety of passengers.  The responsibilities are challenging but gain one great respect.

The first level of training is in the private pilot license.  One will learn the skills necessary to safely operate an aircraft.  One must also attend ground school and learn the theory behind flying.  A practical test is required to ensure one has the necessary skills to be a pilot.  A written test is also required to ensure the  individual has the required knowledge.

Obtaining a private pilot license is an accomplishment, but more straining is required.  The next step for the professional pilot is in training for the commercial pilot license.  The commercial pilot license will enable the holder to fly for a salary.  One must obtain at least 200 hours of flying experience for the commercial pilot license.  More advanced flight training is also required, as is additional ground school.  There is a flight test for the commercial pilot license, as well as a written examination.  One must possess the necessary flight skills and knowledge to be granted a commercial pilot license.

Although the commercial pilot license grants one the privilege of working as a pilot, the aspiring airline and corporate pilot require additional training.  These pilot positions also require a multi-engine endorsement as well as an instrument rating.  The multi-engine endorsement allows the holder the privilege of operating an aircraft with more than one engine.  One will learn how to operate an aircraft with higher performance than they have previously seen and teach emergency procedures such as operating on one engine.  Although challenging, the multi-engine endorsement is exciting.  The instrument rating teaches the candidate to operate in conditions of reduced visibility and weather.  One will learn how to fly departures, enroute procedures, and instrument approaches.  This is absolutely necessary to operate an airliner or a corporate jet.  Modern aircraft can get its passengers safely in almost any weather, and the instrument rated pilot has the skill to ensure this happens.

The next step, after employment, and working as a pilot is to obtain the Airline Transport Pilot’s License.  This allows the holder to be pilot in command (Captain) of an aircraft of any weight class.  All airline and corporate captains must hold an airline transport pilot license.  Most countries require 1500 hours of flying experience as well as a few more written examinations.  This is the pinnacle of all flying licenses.
