Out With The Old, In With The New

Times have changed. Technology has completely changed the trading game. Key is to take advantage of the opportunities.

You can’t really know where you’re going, until you know where you’ve been.

Basically, "out with the old, in with the new" implies a willingness to embrace change and move forward, leaving behind things that no longer serve us in favor of new opportunities and possibilities.

This is a saying that is quite relevant to successful trading. Embracing the new, is what separates most traders.

There’s a great deal to be learned by the way things used to be done in the financial markets, however the days of the open outcry are long gone.

Pit traders are a dying breed and for some, the transition into the new technological way of doing business is just too hard to grasp. The older generation are set in their ways and therefore, are getting tested by the ‘new kids on the block.’

Case in point, Elon Musk has now surpassed Warren Buffet on the world’s richest person list.

This doesn’t mean the ‘old way’ of investing is dead, on the contrary. It means, that that old way of doing things in the financial markets, just aren’t the only way to get it done anymore.

Here, enters the ‘new’ way of doing business – the desktop trader. The playing field has been leveled (to a degree) and now anyone with some Benjamin’s and a WIFI connection could try their hand at the ole’ mighty market.

Speed and accessibility to information use to be the biggest hurdle to overcome, but now those lines have been blurred.

That said, those that don’t truly respect this new opportunity of business, will fall victim to those that do.

The new generation of market participants, are walking into the lion’s den and most don’t even realize it. “If you can’t spot the sucker in the room – it’s you.” That saying applies to all aspects of life and most definitely trading.

Those of us that understand how things operate, have learned to slow it down. When you slow things down and narrow your focus, you begin to see in a new way.

Unfortunately, the new generation of traders coming into the market are being brought up in an ‘instant gratification’ world; and those two words don’t apply to longevity as a trader.

A broken watch is right twice a day, but that doesn’t mean it works.

Not taking the time to learn about the business (the old way), puts you at a significant disadvantage to those that take this career path very seriously and are willing to build that foundation of knowledge.

Sustainability is what most are striving for as traders and the only way to achieve this, is to put in the work. Lazy alert chasers will always find themselves late to the party; and that’s not sustainability.

With the number of resources out there, building a career in this business and becoming self-sufficient in today’s ‘new’ way of trading, is more than possible; you’ve just got to be willing to do whatever it takes.

Yes, the old way is dead and the new way is blazing its own path; but how long you can stay on course is up to you.

Everything is out there for you to succeed in this business. Question is, how bad do you want it?
