Controlling Your Trading Environment

Key to a successful trading career, is to focus on the things we have total control over - YOU.

Focusing on the things we can control and eliminating thoughts about the things that are out of our control can have several benefits – especially in the world of trading the stock market.

Reduced stress and anxiety

Worrying about things that are out of our control can lead to feelings of anxiety and stress. For example, what other traders are thinking about the price of a stock. That is completely out of your control. By focusing on what we can control, we can reduce the amount of stress we feel and feel more at ease.

Better problem-solving

When we focus on what we can control, we are more likely to find solutions to problems we encounter. We are less likely to get bogged down by things that are out of our control and can focus on finding creative solutions to the challenges we face. For example, after a losing trade, we are in control of the reasons behind the loss. We can then take that data and build better processes to potentially avoid the same loss again.

Increased productivity

Focusing on what we can control can help us be more productive. When we spend less time worrying about things outside of our control, we can focus our energy and attention on the things that matter and be more efficient in achieving our goals.

The first thing all traders must realize is, you cannot control the market. The ONLY thing we can control is HOW we react to the market. Controlling our environment is where our focus as traders should remain. Our directional bias of a particular security is of zero importance to anyone outside of your own mind; but that is a good thing. Clearly understanding this puts a trader at a major advantage.

In this business, you must completely let go of controlling anything outside of yourself, so you can focus all your attention on what you actually CAN control – you.

A trader’s mental focus is his greatest strength. Those that effectively build their mental strength, far exceed those that solely focus on understanding technical and fundamental analysis.

Let’s be honest, pretty much anyone can learn about the basic technicals like: support/resistance levels, zones, patterns, set-ups.

What about fundamentals? It’s not rocket science! Understanding a balance sheet can be understood with a bit of study.

These both are the fundamentals of trading – however, they are just the foundation of consistently profitable trading.

Mental strength is where the next level of trading begins. Controlling one’s mind (remaining calm and objective) should be the goal as traders. When a trader can remain calm during a session, the fundamentals of trading kick in without hesitation.

This is what we call, Controlling Your Trading Environment.

This will allow a trader to solely make decisions of his own, not become victim of the many fake market moves designed to take your capital. By controlling your environment, you simply take back control that the market has over its participants. You’re not “making” the market do what you want it to do, you are simply controlling how you react to what the market is giving you.

By remaining in this state of self-control, you begin to ‘flow’ with the Street, instead of fight it.

The market is constantly telling a story, it is your job as a trader to understand what that story is; this is where a trader’s patience pays dividends. Let the “story” unfold. Give the market the time it needs to settle in.

For whatever reason, most traders can’t wait to click that mouse; and you better believe market makers and Institutional traders know this. Why do you think you’re getting stopped out RIGHT before the move happens? Simple answer, THEY are trying to control you.

Now, when you focus on Controlling Your Trading Environment, their b.s. games are just that – games. They have zero effect on your environment which allows you to trade with another level of clarity.

That being said, Controlling Your Trading Environment does not mean you win on every trade – of course not. You can’t control how OTHER traders will react to the market; therefore, you can’t control the overall direction. There’s a huge difference.

Controlling Your Trading Environment puts a you in the driver’s seat. It allows you to play by your own rules and not anyone else’s.

Trade Smarter.
