Wine Tasting At Liquid Assets

My wife and my adventure at wine tasting.

Wine tasting at Liquid Assets

By Joseph Parish

After waiting all day, the clock hands finally pointed to four PM. Pam and I were on our way to the Friday night wine tasting event at the Liquid Assets Liqueur Store. This is a shop located in Seaford Delaware that specializes in various beers, wine and spirits. Located on Bridgeville Highway, this shop has everything you could imagine. As you enter the door and start to wander around the aisles, your only thoughts are how you would like to have one of everything that they have on their shelves. This is no exaggeration for they even have tap craft beers on display, and you can purchase them in a quart bottle ready to take home and enjoy.

This store has a huge selection of wines and spirits, and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable in all aspects of the liquor industry. Several times, I road by the store, and noticed the sign that said “Wine Tasting,” but never managed to stop and enjoy the wares that they offered. This Friday, Pam and I decided to go to the wine tasting, and both of us are glad we did.

Once I have my home bar setup again, I know where I will be visiting. Usually the more bottles of wine that you purchase at one time, the better the price that they will give you, and I believe you should always have extra bottles on hand. As I mentioned, tonight we went there specifically for the wine tasting event. As we approached the bar in the rear of the store, we saw a friendly young lady waiting patiently for our arrival. Tonight’s selection consisted of three different wine varieties along with two flavored Vodkas.

Michael David’s “Goddess”

The first wine we sampled was Michael David’s Goddess. This unreleased wine is a white, sweet Sauvignon Blanc. This was an exceptional sweet wine, but unfortunately was not currently stocked in the store. They expect their shipment in next week. Both Pam and I were impressed with the flavor of this wine.

Michael David’s “Petite Petit”

When I first saw the label on this wine selection, I was joyfully reminded of a circus atmosphere. Elephants adorned the label, and the colors were joyful and brilliant. The red wine itself is made in California, and is a dense, full-bodied style, wine loaded with pure black fruit with a slight vanilla flavor, which quickly coats the palate. It has a remarkable richness with a slight dryness. Pam was enjoying this selection, however, I was not so duly impressed.

Michael David’s “Seven Deadly Red”

This delicious wine burst with a down to earth, vibrant blackberry and dark cherry fruit taste. Aged via oak containers, it tended to acquire a complex flavor, resembling a slight clove taste, complimented by various hints of smoke flavor and topped off with vanilla undertones. This is a well-balanced wine. Although it tasted good, I was not impressed, but Pam did express an appreciation for it.

After tasting the three wines offered, the hostess moved on to several flavored vodkas. Both were rather tasty, and Pam and I decided we would include them into the bar supplies, when we once again set up our home bar.

Rock Town Distillery produces three different flavored vodkas, however, the Liquid Asset tasting included only the Basil and Grapefruit versions. As I was getting ready to taste the Basil flavored Vodka, the hostess informed me that it would be best if I were to taste the grapefruit flavored one first, since the basil will linger, and possibly obstruct my proper taste of the second drink. With that in mind, I tasted the Grapefruit flavor fist.

Grapefruit Flavored Vodka

The Grapefruit Vodka was a delicious blend of the company’s usual vodka with a spike of ruby red grapefruit added. It gave a fresh and citrus taste to the base drink. It would be very good for mixing with club soda, and perhaps a wedge of lime or possibly with a tall glass of ginger beer with lime creating a grapefruit mule.

Basil Flavored Vodka

Now, my first thoughts as I saw this label was “Oh how nasty can it get?” Well, I was so wrong in my judgement. This basil vodka is a blend of African blue basil mixed with the vodka base. It offers fresh aromatic hints of anise, pepper and mint. It would be great to mix with lemonade or to add to a Bloody Mary.

Pam and I both decided that the two-flavored Vodka’s would be included in our stock of supplies for the bar. The tasting lasted for 30 minutes, and was well worth the time to try some new and different wines and vodkas. We will be back in two weeks when they offer a totally different selection for us to choose from.
