What To Do When Your Puppy Has Diarrhea?

Sick of your puppy's poop? happens with every pet owner. You just need to know why it is happening with your pup because diarrhea has various reasons to occur. Some of them can be easy to handle and can be treated at home but the others are a bit alarming. 

Let us begin with the causes and then move on to the ways to treat diarrhea.

Causes of diarrhea

• Food allergies 

Needless to say, as a pet parent you are surely taking care of your dog’s diet but still some kinds of food can cause diarrhea. Recall your dog’s eating pattern and diet from the previous days. 

Did you feed them something that was not familiar or if you had people visiting your home, somebody must have overfed with snacks. Whenever you are adding something new to your dog’s diet, make sure they aren’t allergic to it. Human foods can also be harmful for their gut and cause diarrhea.

• Parasites

These are the most common reasons for diarrhea and can result in severe reactions like - loss of appetite, vomiting, poor growth, etc. Parasites are mostly present in the intestines of your pup and sometimes they are also visible in stool. However, most of them can only be seen through a microscope so your vet might be able to help you. 

• Poisonous food

As mentioned above, eating something that’s new for your pup’s gut can cause diarrhea. Similarly, any kind of random toxic food like a flower, plastic or even pesticide can also cause severe allergies. 

Be very careful when they are outdoors in terms of eating because puppies are curious in general. They might try out new things that are poisonous and cause diarrhea.

• Bacteria

Bacteria can be everywhere, even in the food and water of your puppy. These bacteria can develop infections inside their gut and cause diarrhea. Make sure that there's a lot of hygiene and you are feeding them with clean food and  water. It is better to change the water in regular intervals.

• Stress 

This one on the list might feel weird but it is true that stress can impact your pup’s little gut. Try to understand what can be the reason for stress, if there's a lot of new things happening around them, make them comfortable as much as possible. 

There’s nothing to worry much about it but visit a vet if diarrhea lasts longer and you see some other major symptoms popping up.

How can you treat diarrhea?

1. This one must be on the top of your priority list- vet visit. Whenever your pup has diarrhea, take a sample of stool and visit your vet to get a clear understanding of the cause. 
2. Do not bathe them but make sure to at least clean them with a dry towel. 
3. Hydration is a must, pups need to stay hydrated during the day, especially when they have diarrhea. Make sure they have fresh water to drink.
4. Your vet might suggest some dog medicines or supplements, if required. Do not give any medicine to your puppy without consultation. 
5. Simple and boiled food is the best option, you can go for rice, or anything that is suggested by your doctor. Switch to their normal diet after a few days.
