Get Prenatal Paternity Dna Test While Pregnant

DNA Forensics Laboratory Pvt. Ltd. is a NABL accredited laboratory providing various DNA Testing services in India.

Easy availability and affordable DNA testing services have made a mark on the lives of many. DNA tests are helpful in cases where accurate and biological identification of an individual is concerned. However, a prenatal paternity test is a sensitive topic due to its ethical and moral implications. There are several reasons why a pregnant person may decide to take a paternity test before giving birth. Besides finding out the child's second parent, the result of a prenatal paternity DNA test during pregnancy can also be essential to obtain legal rights, such as child support, custody, benefits, and inheritance.

Important Note: Prenatal Paternity DNA Test does not involve the sex determination of the unborn baby. Doing so is a punishable offense.

What is Non Invasive Prenatal Paternity Test?

A Non Invasive Prenatal Paternity Test helps establish the genetic relationship between the alleged father and the unborn child. Getting a paternity DNA test, i.e., NIPP (Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity) DNA Test while pregnant, is now pain-free and safe for both mother and the fetus. One can get the prenatal paternity test after 8 to 10 weeks of pregnancy. It is 100% (>99.9%) accurate and reliable.

If a mother is carrying twins, a Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity DNA Test while pregnant may not produce conclusive results. This is because there is free-floating DNA in the mother's bloodstream from both fetuses, and current technology would not be able to differentiate and analyze it.

Types of Prenatal Paternity Tests

People who want to take a prenatal paternity test before birth have three options:

  1. Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity Test - The cell-free placental DNA, which flows in the mother's bloodstream, serves as the unborn baby's DNA sample. Hence, only the mother's blood sample is sufficient for the test. On the other hand, the alleged father has to give his buccal swab sample for analysis.
  2. Amniocentesis - This test is performed between the 15th - 20th weeks of pregnancy. A small amount of amniotic fluid is taken out of the uterus and tested. This paternity test requires a doctor's consent, as there are slight risks of miscarriage, cramping, vaginal bleeding, and leaking of amniotic fluid.
  3. Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS): CVS is performed between the 10th - 13th weeks of pregnancy. It involves testing of chorionic villi obtained from the uterine wall. The fetus and the chorionic villi have the same genetic makeup since they come from the same fertilized egg.
