Buying New Bedroom Furniture - Which Option Is Best?

This article looks at the advantages and disadvantages of both fitted bedroom furniture and free standing items.

Is it time to replace the bedroom furniture? If so, which type is best - free standing or built in units? Both have advantages and disadvantages which will be examined in this article.

Fitted Bedroom Furniture

The main plus point with fitted units is the fact that they can be designed to fit the room exactly. Difficult spaces can easily be incorporated into the plans. A clever designer will be able to make use of all of the available space. Sloping roofs, alcoves, L shaped layouts, inaccessible areas - none of these will present a problem! In fact, fitted furniture works particularly well in attics and loft conversions as it offers great storage solutions for those awkward sloping ceilings!

Fitted units can also take up the whole of the floor to ceiling height - once again maximising space and allowing for more storage. This also eliminates the need to clean wardrobe tops, which can be difficult to reach and gather dust. This is a real bonus for most people! They can also fit the whole width or length of the room, leaving no gaps at the sides. All in all, they are very easy to maintain and keep clean.

Fitted bedroom furniture also allows the customer to make use of innovative design ideas and storage solutions. The plans can be customised exactly to meet the customer's needs and requirements - how much shelving, hanging space, shoe racks and so on do they need? It allows for a much more organised space.

Lighting can also be incorporated into fitted units. Practical lighting inside the units is a very useful feature to have - no more rummaging around in the dark! Spotlights added to the outside of the units can produce a lovely, relaxing ambience in the room.

Fitted furniture adds a feeling of luxury and sophistication to the bedroom. It is generally accepted that, if done well, it can add value to the property.

The main downside with fitted units is the fact that, quite clearly, they can't be moved from place to place once installed. Therefore, all things considered, they are perhaps not a great option for people who like to change things about regularly and re-arrange the furniture. Furthermore, it also tends to be more expensive than stand alone units.

Free Standing Bedroom Furniture

The main advantage with free standing furniture is the fact that it can be re-arranged, allowing a bit of variety in the home. Furthermore, if  only one item of furniture needs replacing this can be done easily. It is also possible to take them with you if you move house! Standalone furniture also tends to be less expensive than fitted making it more suitable for families on lower incomes.
