Colorful Trends In The Miniature Garden

The sun is shining and the plants are in full bloom. Summer is finally here! This year, I find myself marveling at the deep green leaves on the trees, the crystal-clear water on the lake, and the bright, friendly flower petals that decorate my neighborhood. After a difficult year, it feels like the whole world is waking up and bursting with life. What do you have planned for your miniature garden this year? As you make plans for new miniature trees and plants, vibrant flowers, and miniature accessories, you may want to consider some of the colorful trends that are sprouting up in fairy gardens all over the country. These are just a few of the latest:

1) Neutral Tones

The word “neutral” is not exactly colorful, is it? But when you plant bright foliage or flowers against a neutral background in the miniature garden, the plants will pop like never before! A woodland garden, with plenty of stone, bark, wood, and soil, is a great neutral backdrop for a rainbow assortment of flowers and fairy cottages. Likewise, a rock garden or zen garden can be a peaceful, neutral escape balanced by a standout bright cactus flower, deep green succulent, or miniature plant.

2) Wild and Wonderful

Those who toil in the miniature gardens and fairy gardens often carefully plan out their containers and spaces. This year, though, many gardeners are trying out a wild, relaxed look that requires a bit less maintenance. To achieve a wild and wonderful miniature garden, consider planting perennials, wild flowers, and miniature plants adored by bees and butterflies. A relatively unkept fairy garden allows the imagination to run wild, inspiring stories about pixies who dart between overgrown miniature plants and ogres who live in the gnarled branches of miniature trees.

3) Elevated Garden

Up, up, and away! Take your miniature gardens to new heights with planter boxes, raised beds, hanging baskets, and window boxes. My knees have certainly appreciated my recent fascination with planter boxes, which make the perfect location for tidy, thriving fairy gardens. I love how my green plants stand out against neutral wood tones. And when neighborhood friends or nieces and nephews come to visit, the boxes are just the right height for them to see and explore all of the colorful miniature plants and fairy houses.

4) Take a Trip

When it comes to colors and styling, today’s most popular inspiration is the lively, Mediterranean. Travel may have been out of the question this year, but you can still escape to the seaside with a garden inspired by this beautiful region. Terracotta pieces and planters, soft light, scattered cushions, brick, colorful tile, and plenty of leafy green miniature plants can make you feel like you have been transported to coastal Spain, Italy, Greece, and or France. Add some lavender plants, miniature grass plants, and cypress miniature trees to your planting plan, along with pastel and pistachio colors.

There you have it! These are my top colorful trends for the miniature garden, at least for this first half of 2021. Of course, any garden that combines the beauty of miniature plants and the fun of fairy life will be a delight, no matter which fads you follow and which you forget. I cannot wait to see the beauty you create in your miniature gardens this summer and in the months to come.
