Making Your Garden Fun and Safe for Your Kids

When kids come along everything changes, and more so than you will likely be prepared for. Sure you knew that you probably wouldn't be able to go out as often, and that you'd be likely to spend quite a lot of money, but did you think about the other little things? Like the impact it would have on your sex life? On the way people would react to you? Or on your décor?? If you've spent your whole life collecting samurai swords for instance then that's going to have to change, and even more subtle things like which drawer you keep your cutlery in and what you do with the spare room will be affected.

And the garden isn't safe either. If you have a garden that used to be your pride and joy or somewhere that you took pleasure in decorating and organizing, then it's time to get used to it being something different - a space where your kids can play without ruining the house and where they'll be able to burn off some energy. That means you can no longer keep beautiful flower beds because they'll just become fodder for flying footballs, and it means you can no longer keep garden forks lying around because they'll be seriously hazardous.

Here then we'll look at some ways you should change your garden to make it safe and fun for your children, while still getting to at least enjoy it a bit yourself.

Decking

Getting decking for your garden is a great idea if you have children for a number of reasons. First of all it means that you can forego having a patio and that will mean no hard concrete for your children to knock their teeth out on. While concrete has many plus sides, it's also a recipe for disaster if you have young children.

Of course you could decide to go full-on with the safety measures and avoid having any hard surfaces at all, but then you'd find your kids would make a real mess of your grass and you'd be preventing them from doing a lot of things they'd enjoy like bike riding/skateboarding and pogo sticking - none of which really works on soft surfaces.

Security

Another thing you should consider when you have young children is the security of your garden, and it's paramount of course to make sure that they aren't going to be able to get out of your garden and find themselves running around the neighbourhood. This means making sure there are no holes in your fences and that they are high enough that they can't be easily climbed. You should also give your kids and your neighbours more privacy and peace by keeping the fences high between your garden and next door's.

Games

To make the garden a fun place to be for your kids you should create as many games and activities as possible for them to enjoy out there. This means investing in balls, goal posts, swing ball and more. If you really want to go all out and spoil your kids rotten you could even get a swing or a whole playground...
