Legendary Mermaids Create Folklore in the Fairy Gardens

On summer days, near an ocean very far away from the Midwest, an adorable little girl loves looking for mermaids.

She spends many hours on the beach with her family watching the waves and peering out into the endless blue water, while praying to see a glimpse of a beautiful woman with a green scaly tail. This girl also spends hours in fields and gardens seeking fairy friends. Her young mind is full of fairytales and magic.

That is why when this child heard of miniature gardening she could not help, but become an avid fairy gardener who dreams of capturing the landscapes imagined in her adventures. The plan for the miniature garden begins with shopping for accessories and fairies, which are the inspirations of the myths that have become so fascinating to her. Starting the online search for new and exciting miniature garden fairies, she stumbles across a beautiful, brunette mermaid with seashells and starfish in her hair; the mermaid looks just like the little girl. Immediately the task of creating a miniature fairy garden, to capture her intense love of all things under the sea, is set into motion.

She starts with a unique container that expresses this girl's fascination with books and fairy stories. A perfect choice is the container called, Fairy Tale Book Planter; it looks like an antique book, but you can plant your newest garden within. On the inside cover of the book, wearing a white wispy dress, is a fairy flying with a butterfly. It is a perfectly magical moment.  As the little girl decorates the miniscape, she decides to add ocean-colored, beach glass pebbles to show the great blue sea. The little gardener includes an assortment of miniature plants mimicking the underwater greenery, as well as adding a flat gray stone for the fairy mermaid to rest upon while she glances toward the human world and admires our many differences. The perfect miniature plant to dress up this moment would have to be Acorus gramineus ‘Minimus’, also known as dwarf sweet flag. This plant looks as though it belongs dancing among the waves in the ocean.

Finally, she decides to finish her garden with some details to make it extra special. For example, she adds a small glass bottle that holds mermaid tears, along with a metal sign that mirrors the silhouette of a mermaid tale and is painted to state “Mermaids Welcome.” Altogether, it creates the perfect "Once Upon a Time" miniature fairy garden for a little gardener whose love of fantastical kingdoms, heroes, and magical objects will follow her well into adulthood.
