Keeping the lawn healthy and well-maintained is one of the great joys of most homeowners.

Keeping the lawn healthy and well-maintained is one of the great joys of most homeowners. Landscaping it is even more appealing and classy, because you are able to show the world the beauty of your garden. It is easier said than done, but the most important thing is it can be achieved through patience and hard work. Before getting into the more sophisticated process of maintaining your lawn, let us first look at the basic requirements and necessities of your lawn. MowingIt may seem easy and simple to mow a lawn but experts say that there is a proper way to do that in order to come up with the perfect lawn for you. According to experts, the best way to mow is by maintaining one third of the grass blades. Avoid pruning the grass lower than what is required because the soil can get exposed and cause weeds to spread.. The frequency of mowing depends on the season, but once a week is ideal for late spring and summer to mid fall. In most areas of the United States mowing is not needed in the wintertime.  Too frequent mowing can stress grass and give a tired look to your lawn. Irrigation Another basic requirement of keeping your lawn healthy and lush is irrigation. Watering your grass should be done 1 or 2 times a week only. The lawn should sip in water only a few inches, as they say “less is more”. The logic is that if you constantly water your grass, the roots won’t have time to work their way down into the soil. Rather, they stretch around the surface of your soil and present a poor groundwork for a plant. Aeration Your root system needs nutrients. However, when your grass gets too trodden, there are not enough nutrients that can penetrate. This is where aeration comes in. In order to improve the circulation of oxygen, poking holes should be done. Most homeowners use 2 hollow tubes connected at the end of a long handle as a tool to poke holes. It is best to aerate when the soil is still moist because if it is hard and dry, it will be difficult to penetrate the soil. Fertilizers Fertilizers are essentially food for your grass to grow to its optimum level. This should be done properly, so be very careful when buying fertilizers and read the instructions to know the best time to apply them. It is also important to learn which kind of fertilizer is best for your type of lawn. Weed Prevention Weeds are the archenemy of your grass, so they should be eradicated before they can spread. You can use pre-emergent herbicides which should be applied before the weeds start to propagate. When weeds have already spread, use natural herbicides that get their effectiveness from nonchemical or natural sources such as corn gluten and salt from fatty acids. Just like human beings, your lawn needs TLC and basic nutrients. All these basic tips can significantly assist you as a homeowner to maintain a healthy, abundant, and green lawn.
