As a pet owner, it may be extremely difficult for you to imagine your life without your pet. But it is a prospect that you cannot ignore. The fact of the matter is that pets are like family; their presence is so vital to one's existence that contemplating their death is extremely disturbing. That notwithstanding, you need to accept the fact that eventually you shall have to say goodbye to your pet, and then, a ceremonial send-off shall be in order; cremation and burial are the two ways in which these last rites can be performed.

Cremation or Burial?

When it comes to the death and funeral of a pet, most people go in for burials. This may be for two reasons. It may be because burying a dead pet in the backyard seems to keep you linked to it in some inexplicable way.  Or, more likely than not, you are ignorant of the existence of the option of cremation. Yes, pet cremations take place as well. There are some crematoriums that cater specifically to dead pets, while a few regular ones handle animal cremations as well. You're probably wondering, what shall be more appropriate – cremation or burial? The decision is extremely subjective, though many people are uncomfortable with the idea of a lengthy decomposition process and thus opt for cremation.

Can You Cremate Your Pet at Home?

Cremating a pet at home is tricky business. You may feel that you would rather perform the last rites yourself, but it is not advisable, especially if you live in a country where it is illegal to do so. Even if there is no law prohibiting home-cremation of pets, doing so shall not be easy. This is because it is not logistically viable. More importantly, it may be terribly haunting to witness the process. Therefore, if you want to cremate your dead pet, go to a pet crematorium instead of trying it at home.

How Are Pets Cremated?

The process of pet cremation is almost identical to that of human cremation. The corpse is placed within a furnace which uses high temperature to reduce it to bone matter. The bone matter is exposed to a magnet to remove any metallic remains (from a leash or bell perhaps) and then reduced to a fine powder using a mechanical process. The powdery remains are stored in a standard container unless the pet owner has already provided a special urn or box for it. The crematory remains are then given to the pet owner who can dispose them off in any way.

Crematory remains can be kept in an urn though most pet owners prefer to dispose them in a way that was closely related to the life of their pet; some sprinkle them over the pet's favorite plant, some bury it near its favorite tree and some even release them into the sea or ocean.

While you may now be aware of how pet cremations happen, be sure to choose a funerary option that you feel is most appropriate to the life and death of your pet.
