Zombies in the Bible

As I sit at my desk and wonder what I can write about it has dawned on me that today’s entertainment consists largely of a huge dose of Zombie related movies and shows. In general, most people will quickly say that it is merely fiction and nothing more. They will contend that there is no truth what so ever in the concept of zombies however perhaps we should see what exactly the bible says about such events. With that thought in mind I will discuss and show references to zombie or undead taken from the good book.

There is a total of 34 verses contained in the bible that can be conceived to talk about zombies and the act of coming back from the dead. Some are a bit frightening in their wording, but each still expresses the same ideas. Let’s start with Revelation 20:5, here the text talks about how our dead shall live on and their bodies will rise from the grave. The bible further states that those who dwell in the dust shall awake and sing for joy, as the earth will give birth to all the dead. At this point in the text we are all cautioned to enter our chambers or homes and lock our doors behind us. It is also suggested that we hide ourselves for a little while until such time as the fury that has overtaken us passes by. The first resurrection is mentioned in Revelation 9:6 where it is said that the remainder of the dead will not come to life until the thousand years have ended.

This mystery tends to thicken as we are told that during the rise of the dead, we will all be changed in some manner (John 5:28-29). In Matthew 27:52-53, we are told that the earth shall shake and the rocks will split as the tombs are forced opened releasing the bodies within them to endure shame and everlasting contempt (1 Corinthians 15:51-53). We tend to ask ourselves what would cause such a frightening event to take place. That too is answered for us in the Lords Book. Isaiah 26:19-20, tells us that we are subjected to these zombies as a result of a God induced plague initially forwarded against those people that are waging war against Jerusalem. This verse even goes as far as to describe these horrible creations that will walk the earth at that time. Its description is that their flesh will rot while they are still standing on their feet after being awakened from their grave. Their eyes will rot while they are still sitting in their facial sockets. Lastly, we can expect their tongues to start rotting as well while still within their mouths.

To those who may be thinking that this is nothing more than a mention towards the final resurrection let me reveal what Isaiah 13:6-9 has to say. The bible clearly states that, “I will make them eat the flesh of their sons and daughters, and everyone shall eat the flesh of his neighbor in the siege and in the distress…” Now that is a bit difficult to misinterpret is it not? We are clearly talking a zombie apocalypse at this point. In conclusion, we are told that when those days are upon us, people will seek death although they shall not find it. The population will want to die; however death will flee from them (Matthew 27:51-53). Time to give these verses some serious thought, I think.
