Before any of that can happen, cyclists must first qualify for the tournament, which is no easy task in and of itself. The cross-country mountain bike route to Paris 2024 is described in detail here.

How many athletes will compete in the mountain biking competition at Paris 2024?

There will be 72 riders in the mountain biking competition in Paris in 2024. In addition to the two universality berths that will be decided upon by the Tripartite Commission in 2024, France has been awarded two quota spots—one for men and one for women—as the host country.

Each NOC is only permitted to offer a maximum of two quota spots, down from three each in Tokyo 2020, for men and women. The distribution of the remaining 68 spots—34 for women and 34 for men—will be determined by events held prior to the Games.

What mountain bike route will there be for the Paris Olympics in 2024?

Points won at UCI Mountain Bike Olympic Qualification events count toward qualification for the Olympics. While NOCs in positions nine through 19 will only qualify one athlete, places one through eight will qualify two athletes.

The UCI rankings will be based on the combined performances of the top three athletes from each NOC during the qualification period, which spans from May 7 to May 26, 2024. If there are more than two Continental Championships, the rankings only consider the most recent two completed Continental Championships.

One athlete from each NOC may compete in the Cross-country Continental Championships held outside of Europe and Oceania, with each spot going to the NOC with the greatest overall ranking in Africa, America, or Asia. Paris Olympic 2024 fans can buy Olympic Games 2024 Tickets from our website.

The two highest-ranked NOCs that have not previously earned a quota position through the 2023 Continental Championships or the UCI Mountain Bike Olympic Qualification ranking will determine a maximum of one spot per NOC for the elite and under 23 races at the 2023 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships. NOCs cannot qualify through the under-23 race if they have already qualified through the elite race.

What will the mountain bike competition in Paris in 2024 look like in terms of schedule and format?

Similar to Tokyo in 2020, the mountain biking competition in Paris in 2024 will include a cross-country race for both men and women. The events will take place on July 28 and 29, with each race lasting from 14:00 to 16:30.

The competition will take place on Elancourt Hill, which rises 231 metres above sea level and is the highest point in the Paris region. The course's environmental impact is minimised because 95% of it is constructed on already-existing trails, with various routes being retained as a legacy for the general public after the Games.

Mountain cyclists in Paris in 2024 should be on the lookout

Tom Pidcock, a multi-sport athlete from Great Britain, won the men's mountain biking competition in Tokyo 2020. David Valero of Spain won the bronze medal in cycling, and Mathias Flockier of Switzerland won the silver.

Pidcock has been competing in the road cycling season in addition to taking first place at the Cycle-cross World Championships in January. Keep an eye on Swiss rider Nino Schurter, who, with his victory in the 2022 World Cup season opening in Petropolis, Brazil, tied Frenchman Julien Absalon for the most XCO World Cup victories ever.

Victor Koretzky of France and Mathieu van der Poel of the Netherlands will compete for the podium in Paris. The current Olympic champion in the women's division is Jolanda Neff of Switzerland. On the podium, she placed ahead of silver medallist Sina Frei and third-place finisher Linda Indergrand.

Pauline Ferrand-Prevot and Loana Lecomte are two more renowned female athletes from France.

Pauline Ferrand-Prevot of France, Evie Richards of Great Britain, and Jenny Rissveds of Sweden are three-time XCO world champions.

The mountain bike, a relatively recent sport, was created in the 1970s as a result of some riders' desire to travel off-road and find new routes. In the 1990s, mountain bikes that could withstand impacts from riding were developed.

Following that, mountain biking took off, separated itself from other activities, and began to take shape.  The first unofficial competitions were staged in the 1980s before the first formal World Championships were held in the 1990s.

Detailed explanations of the laws

Men's and women's cross-country mountain biking competitions are held separately. The riders' technique, endurance, and stamina are put to the test as they compete in numerous circuits around a circle through difficult, steep terrain. The starting point for all riders is the same.

Races often have a lot of laps and a mass start. Riders must complete the difficult, meandering circuit of the race, which spans tens of kilometres, in one to two hours.

Olympic tradition

One hundred years after track cycling and road cycling, mountain biking made its Olympic debut in the Atlanta 1996 Games with separate races for men and women. In its brief Olympic history, France has dominated mountain biking, winning three gold medals for men and one for women in addition to one silver and one bronze.

Switzerland has also garnered six medals. The team's successful history is largely attributable to Nino Schurter, who has won a gold, silver, and three bronze medals and is the overwhelming favourite to win the Olympic gold at the Tokyo 2020 Games.
