34 spots are up for grabs in events being played on the PGA TOUR, DP World Tour, Asian Tour, Japan Golf Tour, PGA Tour of Australasia, and Sunshine Tour all over the world. Events at Burnham & Berrow, Dundonald Links, and Royal Cinque Ports have boosted the number of Final Qualifying spots by four to guarantee a minimum of 16 spots and West Lancashire on 4 July.

The R&A's Johnnie Cole-Hamilton, Executive Director of Championships, said, "We have put up an intriguing programme of events that travels to many different parts of the world and gives golfers the opportunity to qualify for The Open at Royal Liverpool. We appreciate the support of our professional tour colleagues and look forward to seeing who wins each tournament to secure a prized spot in the Championship this year.”

The Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard, the Wells Fargo Championship, and the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday are three PGA TOUR competitions on the calendar. There will be three qualifying spots available for each event.

The World City Championship presented by the Hong Kong Golf Club on the Asian Tour, the Mizuno Open on the Japan Golf Tour, and the KOLON Korea Open, which is co-sanctioned by the Korean Golf Association and Asian Tour, will all offer a total of ten spots in Asia.

Three spots on the DP World Tour will be given away at the Sir Nick Faldo-hosted Betfred British Masters, Made in HimmerLand, and Genesis Scottish Open. Six golfers have already qualified thanks to the ISPS HANDA Australian Open and the Johannesburg Open, which were held at the conclusion of the previous year.

In contrast to prior standards, the top players who make the cut and are not already exempt as of The British Open's entry deadline on June 1 will be given qualifying spots.

The next non-exempt player will be chosen from a reserve list for each event played before June if a golfer who qualified for a qualifying spot later becomes exempt under one or more categories before the entry deadline. The exemption categories for The 151st Open have also been approved by the R&A.

The World Amateur Golf Ranking® has created a new exemption for top amateur golfers, under which the winner of the St. Andrews Links Trophy, The Amateur Championship, and European Amateur Championship will receive a spot in The British Open 2023.

The exemptions for the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup, which were rotated annually, have been eliminated, while the exemption for the Asia-Pacific Diamond Cup has been excluded for 2023 because the competition won't take place this year. After decision on players who have switched to LIV Golf is made, Cameron Smith learns his destiny in the British Open. Following the completion of the list of exemptions, Australia's Cameron Smith is qualified to defend his British Open Championship crown.

Players affiliated with LIV Golf will be permitted to compete at Royal Liverpool as long as they satisfy the requirements for an exemption, according to the Royal & Ancient Golf Club (R&A).

Smith received a 60-year exemption thanks to his victory at the 2022 Open at St. Andrews.

The 29-year-old was later suspended from the PGA Tour after choosing to sign with Greg Norman's LIV Golf, but the four major competitions are independently organised and have their own eligibility rules.

Johnnie Cole-Hamilton, executive director of championships at the R&A, said,

"We have designed an intriguing programme of events that takes in many places across the world and provides the opportunity for golfers to earn a place in the British Open at Royal Liverpool."

"We appreciate the support of our colleagues on the professional tours and look forward to seeing who wins each tournament to secure a coveted spot in the Championship this year."

Phil Mickelson and Louis Oosthuizen, two additional previous champions who have signed with LIV Golf, will be able to compete at Royal Liverpool. A berth has also been won by Dustin Johnson and Bryson DeChambeau thanks to their top-10 finishes in 2022.

Martin Slumbers, the head of the R&A, said in October that the British Open would separate itself from the strife that has divided the sport, with the R&A remaining impartial."

"We won't violate 150 years of tradition by keeping the British Open closed", he declared.

The name speaks for itself. And that is significant. We shall make sure that there are suitable courses and methods of qualification. "

"The 151st Open needs to distance itself from the current conflicts and make sure we uphold our principle—having the top players in the world compete—instead."
