Top Things To Do: Launceston, Tasmania

Launceston is a town full of surprises and a lot of things to discover – here are some of my favourites to look out for!

Launceston is a natural heaven perched on the banks of the Tamar River or Kanamaluka. This historic city is aloof by nature, but as a local I can vouch that it is overlooked for its mouth-watering food, wine, arts, culture and of course, scenery! This quaint riverside town exudes aesthetic countryside charm topped off with vibrant urban landscapes, resulting in a unique array of splendid architecture and cultural offerings.

Although this city falls under the radar when travelling to Tasmania, if you ever come across this blog, I’m sure you will change your mind. I have rounded up some of the best things to do in Launceston that will make you well appreciate the city which it is!

Cruise the Tamar River

One of the most cost-effective ways to immerse yourself in the brilliant natural scenery of Launceston is to hop on one of the Tamar River cruises. These river cruises will navigate along the surreal Tamar River, letting you enjoy all its riverside magnificence in all its natural glory! Most cruises will have a skipper who not only guides you through the sights and sounds you see, but also enlightens you about the rich history and culture of the town and its people!

The Launceston River cruises will offer you a chance to enjoy a unique on-water angle of the Cataract Gorge, Tamar Valley, Seaport Precinct, the vineyards, rugged hills, and the splendid riverfront locales. This makes it one of the sights-after attractions for those looking to enjoy a sightseeing experience of Launceston's pristine natural beauty.

Swim in the Cataract Gorge Reserve

Now that you’ve got a glimpse of the city’s ethereal natural beauty, let’s head down for a relaxing swim. Swimming in the Cataract Gorge Reserve is one of the go-to pastimes when in Launceston, and this cool swimming pool is located in a stunning natural setting, filled with fresh water from the nearby First Basin. There are also many shaded pockets of space by the water, which is ideal to just sit down, and take in the surrounding wilderness.

The gorge is also home to a suspension bridge and a Chairlift, both offering aerial views of the water running down from the mountain. If you’re planning to lollygag around the region, sit next to the water – you'll transcend to a higher realm of stillness where your only companions will be the branches swaying away in the breeze and the tranquil echoes of the birds doing their little concerts in bird land.

Explore the artsy bit of the town

Tasmania is paradise for art-enthusiasts and a major art joint in town is the Queen Victoria Museum of Art Gallery. Sauntering around the gallery may not have the same shocking effect as strolling down the MONA in Hobart, but it is still a great heritage place with exciting art displays and workshops.  From indigenous art exhibitions that pay homage to the ancestors of the land to state-of-the-art feature presentations of outer space, there are many experiences for the whole family. There is also a great deal of antiques and fossils to be discovered!

Day trip to a massive lavender farm

Since the town sits right at the doorstep of many picturesque locations, day trips are common in Launceston. If you're a travelling couple, venture no further than the Bridestowe Lavender Estate, which is the biggest lavender farm in the country. The fields reach the highest shade of purple in the summer months, but all-year round this paradisiacal sea of lavenders is pretty much gorgeous. The stuff of fairytales – spend a romantic day here enjoying the lavender-infused ice cream and other mouth-watering delights from the cafe and even take a couple of artisanal souvenirs back home!
