Vivid Sydney 2023: Don’t Miss These Events

Now in its 13th luminous year, Vivid Sydney is back bigger and brighter than ever before with a lot of festival-firsts, world-firsts and a whole lot of surprise guests! Running from May 26th to June 17th, Vivid Sydney 2023 will unite the most creative light artists, music makers, thought leaders, and food creatives in what will be the biggest festival of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.

Here’s a quick lowdown on some of the most-anticipated events and installations for Vivid Sydney 2023.

A massive drone show

Perhaps the most hyped event this year will be the biggest drone show in the Southern Hemisphere, Written In The Stars. This record-breaking display takes you on a spellbinding journey through the natural world that surrounds us, exploring the depths of our solar system through fascinating choreographed manoeuvres. Since forever, humans have aided the assistance of the stars and space objects for guidance and inspiration. The endless possibilities of the outer world is the sole inspiration behind this epic light show.

You can watch the drone show for free from 9pm onwards on select dates. For unique vantage options, try hopping on one of the Vivid Sydney harbour cruises, or call out that long-lost relative of yours near The Quay, and head to their rooftop!

A walk through a ‘concrete jungle’

One of the most coveted Vivid Sydney destinations, the Royal Botanic Garden, is hosting Lightscape, a multi-sensory extravaganza stretching for 2.1kms. Following a highly-successful showcasing in the UK and Melbourne, this light show will dazzle Sydneysiders with an illuminated botanical oasis. Although the event will see the long-running free venue of Vivid Sydney turn to a ticketed one, everyone believes it is well worth the money. Be mesmerised as you stroll beneath brilliantly lit-up tree canopies, past life-sized flowers, and through luminous glowing tunnels.

Iconic sails with an iconic display

A classic and centre of attraction in every Vivid Sydney festival, the ‘Lighting of The Sails’ is a true fan favourite. This year's ‘Lighting of The Sails: Life Enlivened’, is a tribute to the late John Olsen, a pioneer in nature portraits, and will see his lifelong depiction of nature and energy splashed onto the sails of the Sydney Opera House. The iconic sails will come to life every evening during ‘Lights On’ at 6pm and will remain illuminated till 11pm. Best vantage options include cruise terminal pier near Squire’s Landing or from the outer decks of one of the popular Vivid dinner cruises.

First Nations influence

Vivid Sydney 2023 is special in many aspects, one of them is bringing the First National talent to the spotlight and shedding light on the creative and artistic minds behind the same. Their influence and inspiration can be seen across all the four pillars of the festival – Vivid Light, Vivid Music, Vivid Ideas, and the latest addition, Vivid Food. Tumbalong Nights is the go-to for those looking to dance it out to free concerts, and you can also listen to the latest tunes of First Nations artists, both upcoming and up and running!

The Warakirri Dining Experience is also an event celebrating the 60,000 years of First Nations culture. Expect a comprehensive night of First Nations food paired with pure entertainment of music and storytelling. First Light is another event paying homage to the oldest continuing living culture. The event kicks off right before ‘Lights On’ with a Welcome to Country, followed by a slew of dance and music performances from the likes of Yothu Yindi, Muggera, and more.

Pro tips:

When you head out to explore Vivid Sydney, whether it’s early or late in the night, avoid taking your cars. Use public transport. Weekends tend to get really busy so it’s best to head out during your Monday to Fridays.
