Es Migjorn Gran is the island’s second smallest municipality and is located in southern Menorca.  The area gets its name from the small, inland village of Es Migjorn Gran which sits in a picturesque landscape surrounded by pine covered hills. One of the great attractions of the coastal region are the many small coves with pristine beaches that are only accessible by foot or by sea – almost guaranteeing you peace and privacy.

Es Migjorn Gran is also conveniently situated so that you can easily and quickly get to some of the island’s other areas of interest including Ciutadella, Ferreries, Es Mercadal and Alaior.

Trying to cover everything there is to see and do in this guide to Es Migjorn Gran is impossible so, instead, we’ll focus on what we think are a couple of the more interesting and pertinent things for the holidaying family.

The Breath-Taking Scenery of Binigaus

Any guide to Es Migjorn Gran will always mention the varied scenery of this area. It is the scenery, the different landscapes, the flora and fauna that make this an ideal location for those of us who love to ramble.

If you like strolling through lush woodlands, then the pine covered hills that are characteristic of so much of the area offer you endless opportunities to explore peaceful footpaths or Camis that wind their way through the woods. Take a picnic lunch with you and stop for a bite to eat as you experience the wonderful scenery of this beautiful area.

If, on the other hand, you like to wander barefoot along almost deserted beaches then you will love the white sand, virgin beach of Binigaus and even more so the isolated and seldom frequented Cala Escorxada beach.

In the Heat of the Summer – Sant Cristófol Comes Alive

Despite being visited by tens of thousands of holidaymakers every year, Menorca still has many places that retain the characteristics of small island villages. One such village is Es Migjorn Gran which was founded in the eighteenth century and is still laid back and pastoral. It’s a great place to experience Menorcan life outside of the hustle and bustle of Mahon or other prime tourist spots. As you stroll along the streets, you can enjoy some fine local wine, a great cup of aromatic coffee, traditional Spanish food and explore the beautiful Church of Sant Cristòfol. If you’re there on Market Day, drink in the sights, sounds and aromas of its traditional market.

But, come the Festival of Sant Cristòfol, on the last weekend of July or the first weekend of August, the whole village bursts into life. At around 5pm on Saturday the church bells start ringing and the village band, accompanied by huge dolls, parade through the streets. The day’s festivities culminate with a magnificent horse parade through the town.

On Sunday a solemn mass is held at the church for horses, riders and the rest of the town, followed by more parades held in the town square and through the streets, finishing with a reception at the town hall.

For All the Family

Santo Tomas is a seaside resort built with the family in mind. It’s maybe not a place you would expect to find in a guide to Es Migjorn Gran but it is a great location for the entire family with plenty of places to enjoy a snack and lots for the kids to do.
