Out And Active: Places To Run In Amsterdam

Get out your running shoes and enjoy the sights of Amsterdam while getting your daily dose of exercise!

Despite its status as an iconic metropolis complete with impressive, modern architecture and trendy bars and restaurants, Amsterdam has not failed to recognise the importance of green spaces to allow its residents to breathe fresh air. Purposefully designed for people to use in whichever fashion they please, be it walking, cycling or running, all of the city’s wonderful parks are equipped with wide paths so that every park-goer can peacefully coexist. So, why just walk around the city when you can combine sightseeing with good exercise?

You’ll be able to get started on your scenic holiday no time, with multiple flights from the UK leaving daily and taking just over an hour. Book yourself some accommodation (and some convenient Amsterdam airport transport to deliver you there) and your mini-break is sorted!

Amsterdamse Bos

The largest recreation ground in the city boasts several different terrains and environments so you can practice your cross-country skills. All in one place can you try out woodlands, meadows and even hills – a rarity for the Netherlands! This is a beautiful spot in its own right, with wild grasslands and artificial lakes and rivers for you to enjoy as you jog by. If you fancy a break from running, this space is also ideal for cycling given its nice wide paths.

Flevopark

Take on one of Amsterdam’s woodier parks for a slightly more challenging run. Flevopark is divided by a lattice of wide footpaths that, when followed, allow you to explore the entirety of its healthy green grounds. There are also plenty of cute cafés, which are perfect for a quick break! Its northern section backs onto the lovely Westelijke Merwedekanaaldijk, where you can sit and enjoy the river as you catch your breath. It then re-joins the park at the southernmost entrance, so it’s perfect for a long circuit to both test your agility and offer you a long, enjoyable view of the waterways.

Oosterpark

Whether you’d like to stick to jogging or you fancy trying your hand at other fun and healthy fitness activities, Oosterpark is an absolute delight for the keen exerciser. Open air Tai Chi lessons take place every morning and you can simply join in as you please. Its ideal location just outside the city centre makes it the perfect spot for a quick exercise break in between your city sightseeing, or a full-blown fitness session. Located in the western region, it is distinctly quieter than many of the other green spaces, allowing you plenty of breathing room as you enjoy the scenery.

How to Get There

It couldn’t be easier to get started on your holiday with a fitness angle, with convenient flights from London arriving daily at Amsterdam airport. Transport into the city can be a little confusing for first time visitors, so it’s recommended you pre-book your Amsterdam airport transport before you leave home, so you can make your way into the centre without the hassle.

Pack your running shoes for your Dutch escape and get ready to enjoy its many marvellous green spaces.
