Amazing Architecture: Vienna’s Most Impressive Buildings

Vienna is one of Europe’s best cities for walking. Simply put, this is undoubtedly because of the stunning architecture that surrounds you at every turn. Whether your interest lies in the gothic, modernist, baroque or art nouveau, the buildings in this wonderful and very accessible capital city are well worth a stop on any trip. Even those with only a passing interest in architecture will be able to appreciate the spectacular construction that makes this destination what it is. Being relatively compact, the city makes for a popular stop on a Danube river cruise. It’s also highly walkable, so put on a pair of comfortable shoes, take to the beautiful old-world streets and allow yourself to be captivated.

Stephanskirche

This magnificent cathedral is around 900 years old and still draws more visitors than almost any other building in the city, with three million flocking to it every year. It’s a grand, gothic construction with a wonderful array of design features, including its exquisite tiling. Although it’s very old, there has been extensive work done to it over the years, which has preserved its appearance to remain as authentic as possible.

Hundertwasserhaus

The unusual looking Hundertwasserhaus is one of Vienna’s most striking buildings to behold and it’s well worth a stop on any exploration of the centre. Designed as a counter to the predominant blocky modernist style, the building seems to bend and shift shape with the trees and landscape around it, to the point where it almost appears to have ‘melted’. It’s truly a unique sight and its location means Danube river cruise visitors can make a quick stop here with ease.

MUMOK

This imposing site takes a completely different architectural direction to the Hundertwasserhaus, with an imposing grey, breeze-block exterior. The modernist masterpiece is home to some fantastic contemporary art work. Although the striking nature of the building might distract somewhat from the artwork inside, both are well worth making the trip for.

Wohnpark Alt-Erlaa

This is considered one of the most impressive displays of social housing anywhere in the world. The complex is large and imposing but it’s also incredibly interesting from a design perspective. The external walls curve down in a wave-like shape, revealing the sheer size of the estate. With thousands of people calling it home, it’s functionality makes it all the more impressive as a project.

Get Ready to Go

A great way to see the buildings listed here is to book a Danube river cruise with a specialist company. This way you can enjoy the sights from the water and then get out and enjoy the scenery first-hand on a day-trip.

Whatever your tastes and interests, Vienna has something for you. The buildings are ornate and contemporary, old and new, in equal measure, and alighting to explore on a shore excursion here is one of the most memorable parts of a Danube river cruise.
