Day Trips From Florence: 3 Top Towns To Visit

The Italian region of Tuscany is known throughout the world as a destination unlike any other. It simply oozes class and sophistication that appears to fuse seamlessly with authentic, rustic charm. Most people who come to the area come for the scenery, the food, the wine and the atmosphere, as well as amazing art, history and culture, and you’ll find each of these in abundance throughout Tuscany. There really is nowhere else like it. Most visitors base themselves in the magnificent city of Florence, and spend time visiting other areas. These are three of the best day trips from Florence to suit the most discerning of travellers.

Volterra

This delightful, walled hill-top town is an historical remnant of Italy’s medieval past, and the power that once resided in its walls is palpable for history fans. It’s charm is complemented by its tranquillity; it is less touristy than other towns which makes it a relaxing place for a stroll, and one of the most unique day trips from Florence.

The town is no slouch when it comes to sights, however, and there are fantastic walls and ancient structures to explore, as well as a cathedral that is over a thousand years old. There’s also the art gallery that hosts a great selection of works and a remarkable acropolis too. But the real draw is the outstanding fortress on the hill-top, set amongst the leafy green backdrop of Tuscany.

Monteriggioni

Monteriggioni draws fans of films and video games that have been set within its attractive borders, and it might just be one of the most breathtaking spots in all of Italy! The town is walled, like many towns in this region, and there are fourteen towers along the walls that make good checkpoints on a walk around the cobbled streets. Nearby is the exceptional Abbey of Santi Salvatore e Cirino – an ancient abbey that is extraordinarily well-preserved.

San Gimignano

A typical Tuscan village, San Gimignano should be on every itinerary for day trips from Florence. There is a great deal to do here besides simply enjoy the scenery and the food. Start by taking the lift (or the stairs) to the top of an ancient tower to see an unmissable view over this truly picturesque town.

The town is also great when it comes to food and drink, whether that’s to take away or to enjoy on a warm sun kissed restaurant terrace. The best gelato in the region is served right here, and there are great fashion shops and artisan food and wine producers looking to sell you the best that money can buy.

Live Your Tuscan Dream

These three towns are all excellent day trips from Florence, and you’ll undoubtedly find yourself months later daydreaming of the warm Tuscan sun, the quality and quantity of the food and the wine, and those unbelievable vistas over the horizon. You might even start planning when you’ll be heading back!
