Discover The Magic Of Comino Island: Malta’s Secret Gem

Thanks to the convenient Malta Airport shuttle service, you can explore the delights of Comino Island.

Famous for its fascinating history and North African influences, Malta is a picturesque island which combines impressive fortresses and ancient ruins with quaint fishing villages and rural life. Its endless sandy beaches lining the deep blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea make it the ideal place for a relaxing holiday, particularly thanks to the convenient Malta Airport shuttle serviceoffered by Shuttle Direct. Mostly though, it is neighboured by a range of lesser explored islands which will appeal to the independent traveller, the best of which is Comino.

Go Off the Beaten Track: Visit Comino Island

·         A Peaceful Escape

The island of Comino may only be 2km long and 1.7km wide but it is the off-the-beaten-track travellers’ dream destination. Though it is nestled between the isles of Malta and Gozo, it boasts a completely different ambience. It is peaceful and serene with far fewer tourists milling around than you can expect in the more popular destinations.

·         Stunning Landscapes and Wildlife

This beautiful island offers a range of breath-taking landscapes, including sandy beaches and coves, as well as rocky cliffs and deep caves. In fact, the entire island has been recognised as a wildlife sanctuary, boasting an abundance of greenery, lavish flowers and wild herbs. These are of course a wonderful sight, but its famous Blue Lagoon is one of its best hidden gems. The crystal-clear waters are awe-inspiring and the perfect place for a hike with stunning views.

Insider tip: At the peak of summer, the Lagoon can be quite crowded. Visiting it anytime from mid-August to late September is ideal. Oh, and don’t forget your camera!

Ferry Services to the Island

·         From Cirkewwa

With regular ferry services from Malta to Comino, there is no reason not to go there for a memorable day trip. Make your way to the north of the island and catch a boat from Cirkewwa. The crossing takes less than half-an-hour and will drop you off at San Niklaw Bay. This is the cheapest option.

·         From Silema or Bugibba

Alternatively, the Comino Hotel organises several daily ferries from Malta to Comino which non-guests can book themselves onto. The easiest option, though, is to catch a ferry from either Silema or Bugibba. These are usually double the price of the first option but potentially more convenient depending on where you are staying.

How to Get There

Getting to Malta is fairly painless, with Ryanair, Air Malta and easyJet all offering direct flights from the UK to Malta Airport. Flight time is roughly three hours. Once you land, I’d recommend taking a shuttle from the airport to your chosen accommodation. The transfer should take half-an-hour. I would suggest getting a transfer from Malta Airport. Shuttle servicescan often be booked in advance. A friendly driver will meet you outside the terminal and safely take you to the city centre. If it is a local driver, and it usually is, they may even be able to provide a few insider tips about where to find the best hidden gems.

Lukas Johannes is a driver for Shuttle Direct, the number one provider of shared and private airport transfers all over Europe and northern Africa. If you’re looking for an affordable Malta airport shuttle service Lukas and his colleagues can make sure that you and your luggage get to and from the airport swiftly and safely.
