Shots played up to the right may find their way down a hill to the green, but shots played too far to the right may leave difficult chips, and any shot played directly at the pin may encounter difficulty, either short or long. The Hoylake 7th serves as a stark reminder to players of the course's potential difficulty following a relatively tranquil three-hole stretch. Regardless of the wind, a daunting tee shot presents significant obstacles.

The hole becomes brutally long into a strong wind, requiring a 250-yard drive to even reach the fairway, whereas if the wind shifts to the east and the ground is firm, it will be difficult to carry the ball onto the fairway and then stop it short of the nasty bunkers on both sides of the driving area. From the tee, Gorse is waiting for very loose shots to the left and right.

The approach is a little easier if the fairway is located, and there is plenty of space to the right to work a ball toward the surface, but shots to the left of the green run the risk of landing in two dangerous bunkers. Although the surface is at the same height as the majority of the area around it, it moves a lot, making it difficult to read it accurately. 8th hole: Briars, a par four

With bunkers guarding the right side of the fairway and gorse encroaching on the left, the issue then becomes how aggressive the players want to be. The fairway gets tighter as players descend, increasing the chance that they will encounter gorse. The fairway bunkers to the right of the fairway are a good place to hit your ball, leaving you with a medium-to-short approach shot and a great chance to make birdie.

However, if players are too cautious to a right pin, a small run-off area and two front bunkers are ready to snag golf balls and possibly turn a birdie into a bogey. So, when playing in difficult conditions, especially after missing the fairway off the tee, caution should be used.

The par three at Dowie

Players reach an enjoyable par 3 as they complete the front nine. There are problems on "Dowie" because the wind is usually right to left and slightly down. With a long green that runs diagonally from left to right at an angle, 200 yards away, it can be challenging to hold the ball up against the wind and land it short.

Players will need to hit the ball well short of the green to attack any sort of front pins if the ground is firm because there are two front bunkers that make the entrance narrow.  Back pin placements can also be problematic due to run-off areas to the left and a bunker to the left, especially because the green sits at a slight left-to-right angle from the tee Additionally, the green moves a lot, making it challenging to hole short putts for a birdie or, more likely, a par.

Hole 10: A long, par-4
